The First 1,000 Days

Dairy's Role in Brain Development

The Importance of the First 1,000 Days

This first 1,000 days from conception to a child’s second birthday is a critical period for brain development. From what you eat during pregnancy to breast feeding or formula to introducing foods, these choices could impact the quality and success of your child’s life. Children undergo an extraordinary rate of growth during fetal, neonatal and toddler stages, making nutrition a crucial factor.

Benefits of Dairy from Conception to Two Years Old

Supporting a Healthy Foundation for Life

During this time women need higher amounts of some nutrients including vitamin B12, iodine and choline, as well as fluids. These nutrients can be found in dairy and milk has been found to be more hydrating than water. It’s recommended in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans that pregnant and breastfeeding women consume three servings of dairy daily.

Building the Foundation for Healthy Eating

Around six months old you can start introducing foods to your infant, including dairy in the form of cheese and yogurt (always pasteurized). Introducing nutrient-rich foods in addition to breastfeeding or formula, ensures adequate nutrition, acceptance of new tastes and textures, and sets the stage for a lifetime of healthy eating habits.

Supporting Growth & Development

As your child moves from infancy to toddler, continuing to introduce them to a variety of nutrient dense foods is important. At age one you can begin introducing whole milk as part of your child’s daily nutrition in addition to fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean meats. Your toddler is ready to consume most of the same foods offered to the rest of your family.
