Dairy Safety & Storage

Milk Safety

  • Store at 38-40F degrees in the original container
  • Place the milk carton away from the fridge door
  • Keep the lid tightly closed
  • Do not leave unrefrigerated for more than two hours

Milk Expiration Guide

  • All milk once opened lasts 4-7 days past the expiration date
  • Unopened whole milk lasts 5-7 days past the expiration date
  • Unopened reduced fat and skim milk lasts 7 days past the expiration date
  • Unopened non-fat and lactose free milk lasts 7-10 days past the expiration date

Freezing Milk

  • Pour some milk out of the container to make room for expansion during freezing
  • You can freeze milk for up to 3 months
  • Thaw in the refrigerator
  • Separation of fat from the milk is normal, shake to mix
  • Use the milk within 5 days of thawing
